Please don't feed our animals

2 April 2026

It's so important that you don't feed them...

We know how tempting it is to want to pull up longer grass to feed to a donkey or pony, but please don’t do it.

There are several reasons for this:

  • Some of our animal’s teeth are in poor condition or they might not have many teeth at all! This means that they can nibble and pluck grass for themselves but being hand fed grass that's been pulled up from the ground could give them choke or colic. Both conditions are painful and can be fatal.

  • Our animals are all on very closely managed diets. Some are already poorly, on medication or simply very old. If they eat the wrong thing, they can become seriously ill. They may need to go to the mainland hospital for surgery and treatment.

  • Some of our visitors have tried to feed our donkeys things like boiled sweets or nuts. Although our animals do get treats, our team know what they can and can’t eat and sweets aren’t on the list!

  • Donkeys can bite and we want our visitors to leave with the same number of fingers and thumbs they arrived with. You can pet any animal that comes over to the fence to see you but please, always be mindful of your fingers.

Please help us look after our much-loved animals. Thank you for your support - it's much appreciated.
