Wet Leg

Hester and Josh of Wet Leg visited the IOW Donkey Sanctuary on 20th June 2022 to meet their favourite donkey, Archie Baby, who has a real connection to the Isle of Wight band. Wet Leg wowed their supporters at the IOW Festival this year (June 2022), as well as  Glastonbury Festival (June 2022) and then Australia (July 2022)!

Previous Charity Manager, Derek Needham, takes up the story.

"In 2013, when Carol Foote and myself took over the running of the Sanctuary, we had no money and not very bright prospects. Archie Baby, who was just four at the time, had a series of internal tumours that affected his urinary system and he needed an urgent operation. We appealed to our supporters, who donated to Archie Baby and the operation took place. Archie Baby came back to us, and let’s just say that things weren’t the same as before he went! His new waterworks came out at very odd angles, and Archie Baby (and several other donkeys) frequently had a wet leg.

The group (Wet Leg) are very supportive of our animal welfare work, heard the story about Archie Baby, saw the connection, adopted him, and have stayed in touch ever since. Josh and Hester were particularly taken with our miniature donkeys, who loved the affection that they were given!"

Wet Leg have agreed to become the first Celebrity Ambassadors for the Sanctuary and were presented with another adoption of one of the Sanctuary’s donkeys, Angelica, which is the name of another of the band’s recordings! They also received a cuddly donkey to take with them on tour around the world!

Derek went on to say, "The group all have very busy lives now, but we hope that wherever they are in the world they will remember our donkeys in their own little piece of the Isle of Wight".

The Isle of Wight has a special connection with myself as my late husband’s family resided on the island and I visited it a few times with him.

I always support local charities when I demonstrate at a theatre wherever I am in the world and the Donkey Sanctuary was a special place for our family as when my son was a little boy he adopted a donkey from The Sanctuary and continued to support the Sanctuary from afar.

It’s a beautiful place and the donkeys are so well looked after and that care makes such a difference to their lives as most of them didn’t get such a good start in life with the love and care they should have received.

That special care costs money and I am happy to support them at every one of my theatre appearances on the Isle of Wight.

I was lucky enough to be able to get a little closer to them and give them a good scratch! They are all special.. and are all individuals with characters of their own.
